Management & Development Book Reviews

Books of the week:

Mastering Mentoring and Coaching with Emotional Intelligence(Patrick E Merlevede and Denis C Bridoux)

This is an excellent book; well laid out and easy to read. I find some 'text books' very dry and heavy going. This is quite the opposite, examples and checklists, exercises and case studies are highlighted. Useful quotes, comments and resource suggestions are written in the margin and there is good use of diagrams to explain the concepts.

The authors address the similarities and differences between coaching and mentoring and then addresses the subject from an emotionally intelligent perspective.

Essential reading for any coach or mentor, or any Manager or HR professional wanting to understand the subject in more detail.

Universal Manager Dossiers.

These resource books are aimed at Middle - Senior Managers, either as a stand-alone development resource, or as part of a management programme. The dossiers are approved by the ILM to complement the Management Diploma or the Management NVQ, at level 4.

The series consists of 16 dossiers (workbooks) including the following titles:

Risk Management; Delivering successful projects; Planning and controlling projects; The Learning Organisation; Managing for knowledge; Obtaining and Retaining Customers; Human Resource Planning; Business Planning; Financial Performance; Managing Quality; Buisness Relationships; Managing for High Performance; Managing Harmoniously; 21st Century Communication; Managing for Sustainability; Managing Health and Safety.

There is also a CD Rom assignment bank, which is an invaluable resource for ILM centres running the Diploma programme.

The dossiers are practical and easy to read texts, combining the necessary management theory with illustrations and case studies based on real organisations.

The dossiers also contain learning activities which require the manager to reflect on practices within their own organisation. Organisations can begin to see the real benefit of the learning as managers apply what they know to improve the way they work.

The dossiers are also well referenced, and each one contains book lists and reference to websites which will supplement the information provided in the dossier.
